CHINESE shipowner East Sunrise has signed a landmark deal with Wuhan Marine Machinery Plant Company (WMMP) to build three jack-up platforms with two options for three and four more units, bringing the total possible order tally to 10.

East Sunrise will own the jack-ups and lease them to offshore service providers for field optimisation, wind farm installation, well workover and accommodation. However, the company could also opt to sell them, depending on market conditions.

“It is a simple unit with basic functions,” said one yard official.

The first unit is scheduled for delivery in early August and the last is expected to be delivered in mid-2015. Sources said these units have been sold to an oilfield service provider for operation in the Middle East.

Qingdao Haixi Heavy Duty Machinery is a subsidiary of WMMP, and sources said WMMP will build the three jack-ups at its Qingdao facilities.

The three units contracted for building at WMMP are 81.3 metres long by 40.4 metres wide with deck space of 1500 square metres. The first unit will be delivered in 18 months, with the second and third to follow at three-month intervals.

Registered in Hong Kong in 2007, East Sunrise is headquartered in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. The company is engaged in cargo and container shipping as well as ship leasing and trading. In recent years, East Sunrise has also been involved in ship repair and marine project engineering and construction.

A wing of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, WMMP is a vendor of offshore equipment with a focus on module systems integration, jacking systems, heavy lift equipment, thruster and dynamic positioning systems.
